Client Regional District of Central Kootenay
Area 75,000sf
Budget $10M
Design Team Bruce Carscadden Architect, John Bryson and Partners, MCW Consultants Ltd, R.H. Strong and Associates
Construction Manager Degelder Construction Co
Status Complete 2005
Google MapFollowing a successful Master Plan study and referendum, 2003 saw the start construction of a new 1,200-seat multipurpose ice arena and expanded aquatic centre and new fitness facilities. Located in the heart of the Nelson, adjacent the waterfront and historic downtown, the project included a zoning relaxation application for a reduction of on site parking to less than half the required stalls to encourage alternate methods of transportation to the centre. The complex renovation/addition also features on-site storm water bio-filtration swales and a park promenade from the downtown core to the entrance.

To maximize value for the client’s dollar, we designed the ice arena with a cost effective, efficient, pre-engineered structure and concentrated architectural energy on the smaller public concourse areas, reception, and fitness areas.

This multi-purpose arena includes an NHL-size ice sheet, change rooms, lobby and seating for 1,200 people. As well, the renovations include new leisure pools, and expanded fitness and change rooms. In order to meet an aggressive delivery schedule, the Client chose a construction management contract. This “design-build” project was completed in August of 2005.

Google MapBCA has been closely involved in the efforts to upgrade and improve this busy, well-loved aquatic centre in Vancouver.

The 2005 upgrades included the complete replacement of the existing pool tanks to include a leisure component, and mechanical systems as well as a series of code upgrades including a new elevator and access issues. An effective use of budgets presented the opportunity to introduce natural light and views over the adjacent ravine with a cantilevered deck.	Following a successful 2008 feasibility study, the addition of new men’s, women’s and universal change rooms, as well as a revitalized entry and lobby, was completed in 2010.

The change rooms feature large, open spaces to maximize light and security. They are also the first North American aquatic facility to use glass lockers. These lockers, common in Europe, are more durable and resistant to vandalism than traditional metal lockers.

Google Streetview Completed in August, 2011; the Micro-Lofts at 18 West Hastings represents a shared commitment to eco-density between Bruce Carscadden Architect, the Client (Reliance Holdings Ltd), and the City of Vancouver. Located in the historic Burn’s Block Building, which has enjoyed the dubious distinction of one of Vancouver’s worst Single Resident Occupancy (SRO) buildings; the project is a refreshing, 30 rental suite renovation that represents the collective aspirations for generating viable rental units and addressing the widening vacuum for affordable housing within the City.

The design for the apartments explores the dichotomies of small dwelling units and highly livable spaces. Identifying these challenges, we began by focusing on identifying critical livability issues such as light, efficiency, privacy, security and dignity, and looked to small Japanese spaces for their focus on effective use of space without having to sacrifice beauty and aesthetic. Using creative and careful product selection and innovative thinking about layouts and floor plans, a customizable and changeable design was generated. Each apartment reflects the needs of the resident and the requirements of the day – the bedroom becomes a dining room becomes a living room and so on. Design becomes a paramount commodity in an exercise of inches - even the washroom entry door doubles as the shower door depending on the position and latching.

Google MapThe Penticton Aquatic Centre Expansion focused significantly on the introduction of natural light, bright colour, and leisure and spa-like amenities, as well as on providing a well-rounded community facility, available to people of all ages, genders and abilities for fitness, fun and competition.

Windows abound, from the two-storey glass facade, glassed-in viewing, meeting, child-care, and office areas, and rear windows offering views from the hot pool to the mountains. Spray features and a lazy river in the leisure pool offer play and therapy for young and old, and a unique log-cabin sauna interprets European trends for a Canadian facilitiy. Over 50 different specialty tiles from Germany specifically designed for aquatic centres were featured to provide long lasting, durable, slip resistant surfaces and a lively and enjoyable experience.

Funded through the federal government’s Recreation Infrastructure Grant, the Penticton Aquatic Centre Expansion faced a uniquely aggressive budget and schedule project, and yet with careful planning and an integrated approach with all project team members, including the City, Project Managers and Construction Managers, the Penticton Aquatic Centre Expansion came in under budget and on schedule.

This facility is a tangible display of the City of Penticton’s continuing commitment to providing high quality recreation opportunities and enhancing the user experience by providing a fun, safe and healthy environment.
